Now they find themselves on their honeymoon on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. While there, Phil is attacked and partially eviscerated by an unknown animal and nearly dies. The first day or two he’s on high dose of medication. During this time he receives a visit from Alan Strange who tells him of something called a longevity virus--that keeps the infected person healthy, heals wounds rapidly and extends life indefinitely. An unfortunate side effect is periodic mad rages that cause one to take the lives of those he loves most. Phil heals rapidly and has only vague memories of Strange. He and Zena return to New Orleans and during the next full moon Phil’s skin burns. He becomes angry at his wife and leaves work early to look for her. As the night wears on, his rage builds until he is determined to kill her with his bare hands. He walks home in the rain and as he approaches his house, he sees someone whom he thinks is his wife. He attacks and kills her. There are several more murders that occur during a full moon. Zena is beginning to question her husband’s mood fluctuations and the cops are suggesting he might be the killer. New Orleans has a long history of hauntings, vampires, and werewolves. People accept their existence. Is Phil a werewolf? Can he be stopped before he infects someone else? Can he be killed? Will he succeed in killing his wife? The ending may surprise and concern you. Beverley is now working on this werewolf thriller set in New Orleans, with a writing partner, Steven Lefevers.
ExcerptShe picked up the picture of Phil that she kept by her bedside, staring into his dark, brooding eyes. When he looked at her they had always been filled with love. The first time she’d seen him was when she’d assisted him in the operating room. She’d been a student, and all she did was hand him instruments. He was a medical school graduate and he was assisting the surgeon. All she could see of him were his beautiful, caring eyes over his mask. He’d smiled at her. She could tell by the way his eyes crinkled at the corners just over the top of the mask. He’d asked her out that day and she’d been in love with him ever since. He’d always treated her like she was something very precious. God she loved him. She missed him so much her whole body ached. She put the photo down, chewing her lower lip. Symptoms of a werewolf personality could include increasing violence, increasing aggression, unprovoked rages, insomnia and restlessness. She stood up and headed for the bedroom. A lot of those symptoms fit the changes in Phil over the last few months. Had he been attacked been by a werewolf? Was that possible? And if he had, then he might as well have died. She’d lost him anyway. No, she couldn’t think that way. Besides, love could conquer all. Couldn’t it?
